The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion crispum (Ducluzeau) Nägeli.

Type Information
Type locality: "Ce petit Ceramium croît à Sette sur les rochers; je l'ai ramassé dan le mois de juin." [Sète, France]; (Athanasiadis 1996: 69) Neotype: G; IG110783 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 23) Notes: A specimen said to have been discovered by Athanasiadis (pers. comm. in Maggs & Hommersand, 1993) is said by the authors to have priority over the neotype from Banyuls-sur-mer, France, designated by Athanasiadis (1985, fig. 12.). However, Athanasiadis (1996: 69) retains the neotype.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), crisped, irregularly waved and twisted (Stearn 1973).
