The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon squamulosum (Foslie) W.H.Adey, Hernandez-Kantun & P.W.Gabrielson.
