The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa brachypus Harvey.

Type locality: Umhlanga Rocks, Durban, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 814)

Adjective (Latin), simple, undivided, unbranched, of one piece or series, not consisting of several distinct parts (Stearn 1973).
