Taxonomic notes
According to De Clerck et al. (2005: 392), this was considered a synonym of G. filicina by Okamura (1936) and Yoshida & Kawaguchi (1998) but reinstated by Faye et al. (2004). - (04 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Verlaque et al. (2005: 485) note that Wilkes et al. (2005, published in February 2005) proposed the new combination G. luxurians before O. De Clerc & B. Gavio in O. De Clerck, B. Gavio, S. Fredericq, I. Barbara & E. Coppejans (2005, published in April 2005). However, on p. 494 (note added in proof) they consider that the earliest name for this species is G. subpectinata Holmes (see discussion on pages 491, 492), as originally described from Japan. - (19 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry

Distributional note
This entity is likely to have been introduced into harbour areas in Australia, Britain (south coast from Plymouth to Portsmouth), Brittany (France), Spain, and Mediterranean France (see distributional data under Grateloupia filicina var. luxurians), probably via shipping and/or oyster importation from Japan. In the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 177) it was first found in the Etang de Thau (France) in 1994. Also found at Tauranga, New Zealand, growing on a tug-boat used to tow a barge from Australia. Heat treatment (attempted in 2011 and 2012) proved ineffective in eradicating it (Nelson et al. 2013). - (02 May 2014) - G.M. Guiry
