The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: not specified (West Indies); (Silva & al. 1996: 848) Notes: Silva et al. recommend consulting J. Agardh (1873: 7) for further information regarding the type of this locality. According to Skelton & South (2004:301) the type locality is probably West Indies.

Adjective (Latin), verticillate, whorled (Stearn 1983).
