The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramium cimbricum H.E.Petersen.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Grows on Zostera in sandy areas, in calm seas, in association with Ulva and Sphacelaria, etc. (Nakamura 1965).
