The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphiroa beauvoisii var. crassiuscula (Harvey) Yendo.
