The type species (holotype) of the genus Elachista is Elachista scutellata Duby.

Type Information
Type locality: Iwaki, Japan; (Lee 2000: 13) Lectotype: Growing on Sargassum sp.; Iconograph by Okamura, 1918, pl. 163; (Lee 2000: 13) Notes: This is a new name to replace E. globosa Takamatsu, nom. illeg. (not E. globosa Ă–rsted 1844). According to Yoshida (1997: 165), Takamatsu's collection (from Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Pref.) seems to be lost, and no reliable specimen is available in SAP; the illustration by Okamura, 1918, pl. 163 is selected as lectotype.
Eponomy
Named for Kintaro Okamura (1867-1935), Japanese phycologist.
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
Epiphytic on Sargassum sp., Myagropsis sp., Laurencia nipponica and Gelidium amansii (Lee 2000: 15).
