The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Humidophila contenta (Grunow) Lowe, Kociolek, Johansen, Van de Vijver, Lange-Bertalot & Kopalová.
