The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Elachista fucicola (Velley) Areschoug.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), dwelling, growing on Fucus (Stearn 1983).
