Type locality: Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 336) Holotype: Preiss ; MEL; 44488 (Womersley 1994: 345) Notes: According to Womersley (1994: 345) the type is from “occid. Nov. Holl.” Preiss 2557 (Lipkin & Silva 2002).

Adjective (Latin), thread-like (Stearn 1983).

This is a marine species.
Habitat
A subtropical species with only sporadic occurrences on southern Australian coasts (Womersley 1994: 345).

Distributional note
This species was introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 233) via the Suez Canal, being first reported from Port Said in Egypt in 1944. It is now widespread, if infrequent, on the Levantine coast and has been reported from France. - (05 November 2015) - M.D. Guiry
Habitat note
Warm water species; ca. 1 m depth; 3 m depth; on rock flat ca. 30 cm below low water (Lipkin & Silva 2002). Mainly a subtropical species; 3 m deep; pools, inner reef; 6 m deep on marina (Womersley 1994). - (03 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry
