Type locality: "In mari ad insulas Marianas lectani sub n:o 19 communicavit Gaudichaud." [Mariana Islands] (Agardh 1824: 176). Type: herb. alg. Agardh; LD no. 15661 (Yoshida 1998: 113).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
