The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium spinosum (S.G.Gmelin) P.C.Silva.

Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1983).
