Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Torquentidium flavescens (Kofoid & Swezy) H.H.Shin, Zhun Li & Matsuoka.
