Syntype localities: "Among the rejectamenta of the sea at Niton, Isle of Wight, Miss E. Everett; On the shore at Budleigh [Salterton, Devon] Mrs. Griffiths; Gathered in Cornwall by Mr. Rashleigh."; (Turner 1808-1809: 110) Lectotype: BM-K; Notes: The Budleigh Salterton specimen was chosen by J. Agardh as lectotype.

Adjective (Latin), kidney-shaped (Stearn 1983).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Thin, flattened, purplish red fronds, with small discoid holdfast and short stipe, to 350 mm high, 0.5-1.5 times as broad as long. Blade obovate, entire or cleft into obovate or wedge-shaped segments.
Habitat
On rock in shady pools, low intertidal and subtidal to nn m, south and west coasts, occasional.
