Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum glaucescens J.Agardh.

Type locality: "China Sea (?)", (Macau); (Silva & al. 1996: 674) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Tseng & Lu (1988: 35) for more information on the type locality of this species.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), furnished, equipped, embellished, adorned (Stearn 1973).
