The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata lanosa (Linnaeus) T.A.Christensen.

General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Cartilaginous, cylindrical, densely tufted, dark brown fronds, to 75 mm long, attached by creeping rhizoids with branches penetrating host plant. Repeatedly pseudodichotomously branched, apices pointed, widely forked. Large central siphon with 12-24 pericentral siphons, ecorticate, articulations shorter than broad.
Habitat
Hemiparasitic on Ascophyllum nodosum, more rarely on Fucus vesiculosus, never directly on rock (appearances can be deceptive) sheltered mid-tidal, generally distributed, usually abundant where Ascophyllum occurs.
