The type species (holotype) of the genus Herpetomonas is Herpetomonas muscae-domesticae (W.I.Burnett) Kent.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Strigomonas parva (H.Noguchi & E.B.Tilden) J.G.Thomson & Andr.Robertson.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1983).
