The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spongites absimilis (Foslie & M.Howe) Afonso-Carrillo.

Type locality: Sandy Bay, near Montego Bay, Jamaica; (Woelkerling 1993: 14) Holotype: Howe No. 4965; 9 January 1907; no habitat data; marked "over anden Art" [= overgrowing another species]; TRH; A3-132 (Woelkerling 1993: 14) Notes: "Holotype: TRH, Howe no. 4965; includes slides 1460 and 1477." (Woelkerling 1993: 14).
