The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parvodinium africanum var. javanicum (Woloszynska) K.P.Cavalcante, Craveiro, Calado & L.Cardoso.
