The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum steinitzii Lipkin & P.C.Silva.

Type locality: "ad oras Hindostaniae"; (Silva & al. 1996: 661) Notes: According to Tseng & Lu (1988: 49), the type locality is India.
