Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Levanderina fissa (Levander) Moestrup, Hakanen, Gert Hansen, Daugbjerg & M.Ellegaard.

Type locality: Uncatena Island, Barnstable Co., Mass. U.S.A.; (Hulburt 1957: 217) Notes: According to Dodge (1982: 107) the type locality is Woods Hole, USA
