Type locality: Bahamas; (Silva & al. 1996: 107) Notes: Huisman & Womersley (1994: 115) notes that the type is lost; lectotypified by Ellis & Solander, 1786, pl. 22, fig. 6 (see Papenfuss et al., 1982: 411).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), margined (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Found in tropical regions of Australia; also apparently widespread in warmer seas; always epilithic, occasionally with its base covered in sand, ranging from the intertidal to a depth of 45 m; usually in areas of moderate to high water movement (Huisman & Kurihara 2006: 19).
