General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Filaments up to 1-2 mm long, upper intercalary cells 10-20 µm wide, 13-18 µm long, single chloroplast with many elongate lobes extending to cell periphery from single
central pyrenoid about 2 µm wide.
Monosporangia develop from many intercalary cells,
obliquely dividing in upper half of cell, to 9 µm long with
a conspicuous lateral discharge papilla, free
monospores 9-11 µm wide with a single
chloroplast and central pyrenoid. spores spherical, not
amoeboid, move slowly by gliding. sporeling germination
always bipolar, forming a single upper cell that produces
the erect shoot and single lower cell that forms a uni cellular
disc or rhizoid. Unattached sporelings form
long (to 100 µm), narrow (2-4 µm wide), single-cell
rhizoids that can branch at the tips to form adhesive lobes
(Fig. 1B). Attached sporelings have a short basal cell (<10
µm) forming an expanded unicellular disc with several
lobes branched 1-2 times. in mature filaments
(>1mm) 1 or 2 cells directly above the basal disc cell or
rhizoid are 1.5-2.0 times longer than intercalary cells
above, wider towards the apex than the base, having
thickened walls and not producing sporangia.
