Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnodinium venator Flo Jørgensen & Sh.Murray.

Type Information
Type locality: "Occurring from time to time in scrapings of sand containing coloured dinoflagellates especially from south end of beach." [Port Erin, Isla of Man]; (Herdman 1922: 27)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), pellucid, translucent but not hyaline (Stearn 1983).
