The type species (lectotype) of the genus Closterium is Closterium lunula Ehrenberg & Hemprich ex Ralfs.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Closterium dianae var. arcuatum (Brebisson ex Ralfs) Rabenhorst.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A, curved, like a bow (Stearn 1973).
