The type species (holotype) of the genus Zonaria is Zonaria flava C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota implexa (Desfontaines) J.V.Lamouroux.

Syntype localities: Cádiz, Spain; "ad oras Americae"; (Silva & al. 1996: 594) Type: LD?; (De Clerck 2003: 183) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that the type material is in need of critical examination as the description by C. Agardh is based on European as well as American specimens and D. dichotoma var. intricata, of which Z. linearis is a synonym, does not occur along the American coasts according to Hörnig & Schnetter (1992a: 59).
