The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spongites discoideus (Foslie) D.Penrose & Woelkerling.

Participle A (Latin), united, closely connected, connected (Stearn 1973).
