Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Achnanthes is Achnanthes adnata Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Planothidium haynaldii (Schaarschmidt) Lange-Bertalot.

Type locality: Calamam, Antofagasta, Chile; (Frenguelli 1930) Type: "tripoli", 2260 m a.s.l.; (Frenguelli 1930) Notes: Type data fide Wetzel et al. (2014: 442). They also note that Rivera & Cruces (2009) lectotypified the species and illustrated it with LM and SEM images.
