The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphora is Amphora ovalis (Kützing) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halamphora coffeiformis (C.Agardh) Mereschkowsky.
Eponomy
Named for Paul Alfred Colinvaux (1930-2016), ecolgist and expolrer.
