The type species (holotype) of the genus Melosira is Melosira nummuloides C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aulacoseira californica var. haitanensis (Grunow) Houk, Klee & H.Tanaka.

LXXXVI [86]: figs 40-42) Lectotype (designated by Houk, Klee & Passauer 2007: 63, figs 73-84, 103): W; Grunow coll. No. 2561 (slide) (Houk, Klee & Passauer 2007: 63) Notes: Houk & al. (2017: 42) also "assigned herein" the same slide as "lectotype".
