The type species (holotype) of the genus Dilophus is Dilophus gunnianus J.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota moniliformis (J.Agardh) Hörnig, Schnetter & Prud'homme.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1983).

This is a marine species.
Description
De Clerck (2003) notes that this is a poorly known species, characterised by a multilayered medulla and spirally twisted fronds. Reproductive structures have never been observed.
