Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Scinaia is Scinaia forcellata Bivona-Bernardi.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Scinaia furcellata (Turner) J.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), tigone, thickening of angles [of cells] (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cylindrical, gelatinous but firm, brownish-red fronds, 5 mm wide, 100 mm long, dichotomously branched from a small discoid base.

Habitat
On stones, shells and maerl in the shallow subtidal of southern and western coasts north to Pembroke and Galway, not common.

Key Characteristics
Firmly gelatinous with cylindrical thallus. Lack of constrictions.

Similar Species
S. interrupta is larger and lighter in colour and mature plants are frequently consticted.
