Nomenclatural note
"This species was described from the Gulf of Naples (Italy) by Berthold (1882: 516) as Antithamnion elegans. Boudouresque & Perret (1977: 63) proposed its combination under the genus Antithamnionella, but invalidly because they didn't indicate the basionym; ten years later, Cormaci & Furnari (1987b: 755) proposed again the combination under the same genus as Antithamnionella elegans (Berthold) Cormaci et Furnari. However, the resulting name is a later isonym without nomenclatural status according to Art. 6.3 Note 2 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018), of the combination previously proposed by J.H. Price et D.M. John [see Price & John in Price et al. (1986: 16)]. It should be noted that according to Verlaque et al. (2015: 126) A. elegans should be an introduced species into the Mediterranean Sea, notwithstanding its type locality is the Gulf of Naples." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 276). - (16 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
Distributional note
This species has been introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 115), probably by shipping, being first found at Naples, Italy prior to 1882; it is now widespread in the Mediterranean. - (04 November 2015) - M.D. Guiry
