The type species (lectotype) of the genus Euglena is Euglena viridis (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

Type locality: Germany, Berlin; (INA 1996) Notes: Kosmala et al. (2005: 1263) give the following data: Lectotype: Fig. 4 in Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Organisation der Infusorien und ihrer geographischen Verbreitnung, besonders in Sibirien; plate 6, 1830 (1832); Epitype: Lepocinclis spirogyroides strain SAG-1224/13b, permanently preserved material (cells in resin, for electron microscopy) deposited at the Herbarium of the Department of Plant Systematic and Geography at Warsaw University, PL-00-478 Warsaw, Poland.
