The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria foliifera (Forsskål) Børgesen.

Source of Synonymy
Børgesen, F. (1932). A revision of Forsskål's algae mentioned in Flora Aegyptiaco-Arabica and found in his herbarium in the Botanical Museum of the University of Copenhagen. Dansk Botanisk Arkiv 8(2): 1-14, 4 figs, 1 plate.

Type locality: Mokha, Yemen; (Silva & al. 1996: 168) Notes: Lectotype: C (Børgesen, 1932, fig. 1; Guiry & Freamhainn, 1985).

Adjective (Latin), leaf-bearing (Stearn 1983).
