Type locality: "Nouv. Holl." (Esperance, Western Australia); (Silva & al. 1996: 821) Type: Labillardiere; CN; (Womersley 1984: 266) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting C.Agardh (1823 [1822-1823]: 443) and Womersley (1956: 367) for more information on the type locality of this species.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), resembling the mosses, specifically the genus Hypnum (Neal 1993).
