Nomenclatural notes
Excluded from the Mediterranean flora (Cormaci & al. 2023: 160): "This species, listed without any comments in a list of macroalgae of the Medi-terranean coasts of Turkey (Okudan et al. 2016: 111), has been recently reported as a synonym of 'C. gracillimum Gobi' (sic!) by Einav & Israel (2022: 6, tab. 3) from Syria with reference to Mahyoub (1976). However, Mahyoub (op. cit.: 174) reported C. gracillimum [Kützing] Griffiths et Harvey var. byssoideum (Harvey) G. Mazoyer (sic!) [= Gayliella transversalis], a misapplied name for G. mazoyerae (see the note to G. flaccida)." - (08 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
The name has priority over all other names of this species, which has been mostly known as C. strictum Harvey nom illeg. Two subspecies should be recognized: one comprising the Baltic populations (commonly known as C. tenuicorne) and the North Atlantic and Mediterranean (?) populations, for which a proper basionym should be sought amongst taxa described from the Faroes, Norway, Iceland or Atlantic Europe (Athanasiadis, 1996). The name was first introduced by Waern (1949: 636), listed in INA as a "nomen" and INA credits the name to Waern (1952: 405); see Athanasiadis (12016: 942). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
