Type Information
Neotype locality: South Harbour, Helgoland, North Sea; (Maggs, Ward, McIvor, Evans, Rueness & Stanhope 2002: 413) Epitype: Fig. 2 (epitype) 7 January 1999; very sheltered; ELWST, on wall, epiphytic on various algae; BM; (Maggs, Ward, McIvor, Evans, Rueness & Stanhope 2002: 412, 413, 410) Notes: One of the Helgoland specimens (fig. 2) of sample number 496 is designated by Maggs et al. (2002: 412) as epitype. They note that Roth's (1797) figure (pl. 8, fig.1) is based on a specimen collected at Eckwarden but as there is no naturally occurring solid substratum at this site, it is likely that Roth's material was obtained from drift. Samples from the lower intertidal zone of the nearby rocky island of Helgoland resemble Roth's (1797) illustration of C. virgatum (Fig. 1).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), twiggy, long and slender or streaked, rod-like (Stearn 1983).
