The type species (holotype) of the genus Trentepohlia is Trentepohlia aurea (Linnaeus) C.Martius.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acrochaetium secundatum (Lyngbye) Nägeli.

Type locality: Kvivig, Faeroe Is; (Womersley 1994: 48) Type: on "Conferva rupestris"; C; (Womersley 1994: 48) Notes: Dawson (1953: 32) notes holotype not designated, but represented by Lyngbye's original specimen in the Botanical Museum, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
