This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Micrasterias novae-terrae var. speciosa (Wolle) Willi Krieger & Bourrelly.

Type locality: "collected at Rose au Rue, Newfoundland, September 10 and n, 1903, by Dr. Glover M. Allen."; (Cushman 1904: 581)
