The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidiella is Echinocaulon spinellum Kützing.

Type Information
Type locality: Rocky point just north of Kino, Sonora; (Dawson 1953: 83) Holotype: Dawson; July 16, 1940; HAHF; Dawson 651-40, on sheet 18 (Dawson 1953: 83) Notes: Dawson (1953: 83) The type sheet contains only material of the paratype collection, Dawson 288-40. Dawson (1944: 262) notes that the type specimen (tetrasporic - D. 651) was collected from middle littoral rocks , rocky point 3 mi. north of Kino and that it is located in Herb. AHF (no. 18). Paratype (Puerto Refugio, Isla Angeles de la Guardo, Golfo de California, Mexico, 12 June 1952, UC, No. 700648) studied by Santelices (2007).
