Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Type locality: Western Port, Victoria, Australia; (De Clerck 2003: 162) Holotype: LD; 48811 (De Clerck 2003: 162) Notes: De Clerck & Coppejans (1997b: 415) pointed out that the lectotype designated by Womersley (1967: 208) has no status as the specimen is not mentioned in the protologue (Wilson, 29.xii.1887, Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia, LD 48813). The only specimen that matches the protologue was collected by Harvey and should be considered as a holotype. The name D. apiculata appeared first as nomen nudum in Wilson (1892: 162).

Adjective (Latin), ending abruptly in a sharp point or apiculum (Stearn 1983).
