Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidiella is Echinocaulon spinellum Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parviphycus antipae (Celan) Santelices.

Eponomy
Named for Grigore Antipa (1867-1944) Romanian biologist and director of the Bucharest Natural History Museum, which now bears his name.
