Taxonomic note
This species has been introduced accidentally, probably via oyster cultivation, into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 159) being first found in the Etang de Thau (France) prior to 1988. "In the Mediterranean Sea, this species occurs only at the Étang de Thau (France) where it was accidentally introduced with the import of shellfish from Japan (Verlaque et al., 2015: 158, with 9 figures). It differs from N. punctatum [to which specimens from the Étange de Thau (France) collected in 1984, were initially referred to by Ben Maiz (1986, fide Verlaque et al., 2015: 159)] in showing: 1. a rather large blade to 30 cm high and 15 cm wide (blades to 5-6 cm high in N. punctatum); 2. a mono- to distromatic blade (only monostromatic in N. punctatum); 3. scattered groups of cells forming rosette structures, well evident on the blade (rosette structures absent in N. punctatum)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 484). - (05 November 2015) - M.D. Guiry
