The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
Description
This is a slender species up to 20-30 cm in height. It is dioecious and has the
gametangia in small heads which are enveloped in mucus. The mucus is only visible
in the first part of the fructification. In contrast to N. capillaris the branchlets of the
female plants are simple and undivided. The oogonia are up to 700 m in diameter.
The oospores (300 450 m long) are black and have low ridges. The antheridium is
up to 700 m in diameter.
Habitat
Nitella syncarpa is found in clear waters, in ditches, marshes and lakes. In
Sweden the species is recorded from lakes, rivers and marshes with calcareous
water (pH= 6.5-8.0).
N. syncarpa is an autumn species, with mature gametangia from July to September
(cfr. N. capillaris).
