Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Type locality: "Port Philip, Australia" [Port Phillip Bay, Victoria]; (Adey 1970: 6) Holotype: TRH; B1-1674 (includes slides 1342, 1641, and one un-numbered slide) (Wilks & Woelkerling 1991: 525) Notes: Depicted in Wilks & Woelkerling (1991: figs 23, 24). See also Woelkerling (1993: 191). Growing on Acropora sp. (Wilks & Woelkerling 1991). The material was obtained by Foslie from the herbarium of Le Jolis; it is not known how Le Jolis obtained the material. See also Adey (1970: 30) and Adey & Lebednik (1967: 50).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
Found epiphytically on the brown algae Acrocarpia and Cystophora and on the red alga Laurencia in intertidal pools and subtidally to depths of 6 m (Womersley 1996: 173).
