Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptosiphonia schousboei (Thuret) Kylin.

Lectotype locality: Tanger, Morocco; (Diaz-Tapia et al. 2014: 202) Lectotype: Schousboe; March 1823; PC; 0658394 (Diaz-Tapia et al. 2014: 202, fig. 1) Notes: Syntypes: Biarritz (southwest France) and Tanger (Morocco) (Diaz-Tapia & Bárbara, 2013: 342). Epitype: specimen PC0542978 (male gametophyte), collected in Tanger in January 1824 (Diaz-Tapia et al., 2014: 202).
