The type species (holotype) of the genus Kirchneriella is Kirchneriella lunaris (Kirchner) Möbius.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Raphidocelis contorta var. gracillima (Bohlin) P.Marvan, J.Komárek & A.Comas.

Adjective (Latin), very slender (Neal 1993).
