The type species (lectotype) of the genus Micrasterias is Micrasterias furcata C.Agardh ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Euastrum oblongum Greville ex Ralfs.

Adjective (Latin), sinuate, strongly waved (Stearn 1973).
